Personality & Traits

General Overview Lieutenant Uesugi has been described by both her peers and family members as a brilliant and passionate xeno-archeologist with a lifelong love of ancient history and how societies lived and died within the context of their respective eras. In fact, part of the reason she was offered a position aboard the Yamato was due to an outstanding thesis paper she had written regarding factors that may have contributed to the collapse of the Monari civilization at just 27 years of age. Despite her high intelligence, however, Lieutenant Uesugi is silent, reserved, and ever so slightly antsy when it comes to social situations. She can be a bit self-flagellating at times, but this pessimistic outlook has long since improved thanks in part to the unwavering encouragement of both her sisters and her now-husband, Futaro. Outside of subjects that she’s passionate about, she tends to be a woman of few words, only really speaking up if she feels that the conversation is relevant to her and trying to downplay herself in discussions. Under the right circumstances, she can and will step out of her comfort zone to speak her mind, but she is far from an outgoing type, especially stacked up against the likes of her sisters.

Lieutenant Uesugi greatly enjoys the time she spends with her husband, as the warmth that he emanates has always resonated with her. Little moments that the two of them spend in their shared quarters are some of her most precious, even if she’s not the most physical and can’t cook to save her life (Futaro can, fortunately), but even a bad day on the job can be made infinitesimally more bearable knowing that she has someone that she can turn to when she needs it.
Strengths & Weaknesses + Intelligent
+ passionate about archeology.
+ Quiet and reserved.
+ Loves to read.
+ Will occasionally step out of her comfort zone if it’s pertinent to her.
-Shy and difficult to interact with if you’re not someone that she’s already warmed up to.
-Occasionally self-demeaning and doesn’t like being the center of a discussion if she doesn’t feel she needs to be.
-Can’t cook to save her life.
Ambitions With her recent appointment to one of the most prestigious ships of Starfleet’s storied Seventh Fleet, Lieutenant Uesugi plans to utilize her newfound role as Chief of Sciences to obtain a research grant that will help her in furthering her archeological studies. This more than anything has been her biggest drive to move up the ladder, as having better resources at her disposal would broadly expand the scope of her work, as well as giving her an added layer of credibility when submitting her findings to Starfleet Sciences.

On a more personal note, Lieutenant Uesugi and her husband have gotten to talking about having children, though given her history of social anxiety, Lieutenant Uesugi has her doubts as to whether or not parenthood is right for her.
Hobbies & Interests + Ancient History
+ Low- fidelity music (it helps her get into her Zen when she really needs to focus)
+ Matcha Soda
+ Spending time with her husband

Personal History Miku Uesugi was born on May 5, 2381, as the third of five identical quintuplets born to Medical Cadets Maruo and Rena Nakano. She was preceded by two older sisters, Ichika and Nino, and subsequently followed by two younger sisters, Yotsuba and Isuki.

Maruo and Rena met together in their freshman year at Starfleet Academy, on a training assignment to Nexia VII. The two of them hit it off almost immediately over their shared love of xenobiology and began dating in earnest during the back half of the summer semester. When Rena eventually fell pregnant that fall, the two of them were over the moon and decided to go full-in on their relationship. However, concerns began to arise during a routine physical over Christmas break, when Rena was discovered to be pregnant with quintuplets, instead of a single child as the two had originally been anticipating. Given that raising five kids would be a considerable investment, Rena and Maruo sat down and had a long discussion regarding whether or not one or both of them should drop out to focus their efforts on raising the quintuplets. In the end, they eventually settled on pressing forward with their careers, for while it did come with the drawback of having to constantly relocate between postings and subsequently denying their children any real form of permanent relationships directly outside of their family, it would give them a safe and secure upbringing that they had hoped would allow their children to flourish.

And so, in their sophomore year, Maruo and Rena proceeded to welcome Ichika, then Nino, then Miku, then Yotsuba, and finally Itsuki into the world. As a means of helping their newfound bundles of joy navigate early childhood, the two of them agreed that they would take their courses opposite of one another- this would allow one of them to attend classes while the other would stay at the family dorms to look after the children. It was, perhaps somewhat understandably, a very exhausting routine for the two young cadets, who now had to balance full-time parenthood with their studies with very little free time in between. And while at times they had questioned whether or not they had rushed into this too fast, one thing or another always managed to pull them back to reality, and accept the fact that they had committed to making this work for their precious little girls. And so, with much perseverance, they managed to scrape through both the main curriculum and the Medical Academy with a passing grade- not perfect, but they made it work.

Growing up, Miku and her Siblings were extremely close, considering themselves to be five parts of a greater whole, and thus felt obliged to share their emotions and experiences. They did just about everything together, from wearing identical clothing to playing with the same toys and reading the same books. What one did, they all did; when one laughed, they all laughed; when one cried, they all cried. It was perhaps safe to say that in their naïve worldview, they couldn’t imagine living apart from one another.

When Maruo and Rena eventually graduated from the Academy, they requested a more domestic posting so they could focus on raising their children. SFC complied and assigned them to the USS Beagle (NCC-79150), an Intrepid-Class Science Vessel. It was during their time aboard the Beagle that Miku and her sisters had some of their fondest memories growing up, as well as beginning to develop their own separate personality quirks; Ichika developed something of a knack for “reading people” (as she put it), and had a keen eye for picking up on peoples’ feelings that may not have immediately been obvious; Nino became the more sociable member of the group, always in-tune with the latest shipboard gossip; Yotsuba became something a big sweetheart, always offering to help someone in need (even when it wasn’t necessarily her job); and Itsuki seemed to be the quintuplet whose relationship with their mother was the closest, often lingering around sickbay (when she was allowed to) to ask questions about her parents’ jobs.

Miku, for her part, was something of a quiet middle child, who often preferred to bury herself in a book and understanding how and why things were as they were. She couldn’t quite pinpoint when this fixation had started (her father always used to say it was a comment her mother had made about “if you ever have trouble finding an answer to life’s problems, you can always find them in a book,” but Miku never recalled that being a frequent mantra of her mother’s), but explaining how and why things were viewed the way they were- and why they may be viewed differently by someone of a distinctly different upbringing- greatly fascinated her. Ichika had always used to joke that if Miku talked as much as Nino did, she’d be the “why-why-why” girl, and perhaps in many ways there was a grain of truth to the analogy; with an upbringing in an environment that was as regimented as life aboard a Federation Starship was, her growing mind was always full of questions- why a certain way of doing things was considered “efficient”; why sometimes the adults had to stop playing with the girls to “work”; what was considered “work” and why; what made certain behaviors “good” and “bad”; why that cranky pointy-eared man in security seemed to take issue with things that were perfectly fine around other people; why were his ears pointy in the first place; and why weren’t Miku’s ears pointy, amongst a myriad of other such menial questions. And while Miku seemed to accept early on that people weren’t always going to be around to answer her questions, a book would always answer without judgement; it provided facts, ideas, concepts, strategies, and stories that helped to shape her growing worldview.

As Miku and her sisters entered their preteen years, Rena and Maruo were offered the chance to move up the ladder when two senior nursing positions opened up aboard the Ambassador-Class USS Osaka (NCC-26593); while this promotion did come with the down side of having to uproot and relocate away from the crew members that the quintuplets had grown attached to during their time aboard the Beagle, the Osaka would offer a change of scenery, as well as a larger set of living quarters that were better suited to meet their growing needs. And so, after a tearful going-away party aboard the Beagle that doubled as the Quintuplet’s 11th birthday, the seven of them settled into their new life aboard the Osaka.

Their time there, however, was comparatively short-lived to their previous posting, as on May 18, 2394 of that year, the Osaka was conducting a routine patrol in the Bajor sector when the crew received an emergency broadcast from Commodore Kaede Kayano of the USS Yamato (NCC-71807-A). A major summit at Deep Space 9 that was originally intended to establish diplomatic relations with the Dominion had catastrophically broken down, as it came to light that the Dominion’s true agenda was to mobilize and extract the Female Changeling, a Founder who had been responsible for instigating the Dominion War some 21 years prior. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Osaka was quick to divert its course and drop off its civilian compliment at Deep Space Nine (Miku, her siblings, and their father included) and rendezvous with a small Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, and Bajoran coalition that had mobilized to intercept the advancing Dominion Armada. However, in spite of the coalition’s best efforts to impede the Dominion’s advance, the tables were stacked against them from the start, and the Osaka was unfortunate enough to find itself on the receiving end of a Jem’Hadar battery. From a crowed viewing platform on DS9, Miku and her siblings were helpless to watch as the Osaka’s warp core detonated, taking with it most of her 600+ crew, including one Rena Nakano.

For the first few weeks after their mother’s death, the Nakano Quintuplets were beside themselves with grief, physically and emotionally shut off from reality (and each other) as they each came to grips on their own separate terms as to why it had to be them- why, in a time when it seemed the Galaxy seemed to have finally put warfare behind them, that their mother had still fallen victim to the hatreds of a conflict that had been fought and settled way before they were even born. Some of them managed to find acceptance sooner than others, while some may have never found that acceptance. Miku personally was unsure of where she fell in that regard- she knew that her mother would not have wanted her to be vengeful for her sake, but every time she played the scenario out in her head, and attempted to justify the Dominion’s actions for why they felt so compelled to do what they had, at great risk of instigating another deadly conflict that neither side would stand to benefit from, she realized that she couldn’t, in any good conscience, rationalize their actions. And she suspected that some, if not all, of her siblings were of a like-minded mentality.

And yet, what they each felt regarding the matter was not openly discussed between the five of them (quite possibly the first time they had withheld their feelings from one another) until one year later, when they attended the launch of the USS Yamato (NCC-71807-B), which was entering service to replace the previous Yamato (NCC-71807-A) that had been written off following the battle of Bajor. Following the ceremony, the five of them sat down and had a long, honest talk about their futures, and eventually reached an agreement that, in honor of their late mother, the five of them would pursue a career in Starfleet.

And so, on what would’ve been Rena Nakano’s 40th birthday, all five Nakano Quintuplets applied for, and were successfully accepted into, Starfleet Academy’s Tokyo campus. While the five of them had intended on honoring their mother by going into the Medical Field, they were quite surprised when they took the initial placement test and found that only Itsuki had successfully placed into Medical. Though they were still extremely close, the five of them had each weathered Rena’s death differently, which had caused their personalities and interests to differentiate from one another; Ichika became more protective of her remaining family; Nino became mouthy and standoffish; Yotsuba buried her pain and focused more on helping others; Itsuki became needier and sought solace by emulating Rena as she remembered her; and Miku developed an anxiety complex and buried herself in her books. These self-developed coping mechanisms, in turn, influenced which fields they were better suited towards; Ichika became better at reading others to determine if they were safe for her sisters to interact with, and thus she became more suited for Counseling; Nino’s aggressiveness made her a better fit for Security and Tactical; Yotsuba’s altruism led her to develop solutions on the fly, which in turn resulted in her placing better in Engineering. Miku, for all her love of books and learning to understand how and why things were the way they were, led her to place in Sciences, which- like most of her siblings- surprised her. While at first she considered discounting the results of the placement test and forging ahead with a career in Medical, a careful discussion with her siblings led them to the conclusion that, while they still considered themselves to be five parts of a greater, they could not force themselves into pursuing something that they had minimal qualifications or interest for and that they should instead stick to the fields that they knew they would excel in. It was at this point that Miku finally began to see herself majoring in sciences, and while it may have been entirely what she hoped, she did manage to accept that her mother would have wanted her to do what made her happy.

Of course, majoring in five separate fields meant that their curriculums were often at odds with one another, and during their first year at the Academy, the Nakano sisters had very little time to spend with each other. This was especially hard on the five of them, as their whole life up to that point had revolved around their symbiosis, and now they were finding it difficult to lead their own respective lives. Their grades took a hit, and to help get them back on track, they agreed to take on a personal tutor. They were subsequently assigned to one Futaro Uesugi, a fellow Cadet who was taking up a tutoring position for some extra credit on his own grades. While at first, their interactions were relegated purely to one-on teacher-student tutelage, over the course of their fall semester and Christmas Break, he’d developed something of a friendly rapport with Yotsuba, which didn’t particularly sit well with any of her siblings. Ichika more-or-less passive-aggressively warned Futaro not to be getting too close, Nino told it to him rather bluntly, Itsuki skipped a class to essentially stalk Futaro and Yotsuba (In her words, she was concerned about her sister getting into something she’d regret), and Miku voluntarily kept her distance whenever Futaro attempted to be a bit more social. However, this did little to defer Futaro from creeping his way into their lives, and he began (much to their reluctance) to turning his attention learning more about them so that he could help them to “open up” in his words, and make it easier for him to understand how they operated. As you could probably expect, this was met with some resistance by the Nakano Quintuplets at first (Nino even punched him- once, and even then she got a suspension for striking a tutor), but one by one he gradually found an opening that helped him to get closer with the five of them. Miku, in particular, he bonded with over her love of history, especially regarding generals of the Sengoku period. He even encouraged her to channel this passion into a turn paper for the end of her sophomore year, which merited her first A+ at the Academy and praise from her instructors.

Over the course of her third year, she began to realize that she just enjoyed spending time in Futaro’s company, even if it didn’t necessarily pertain to schoolwork. Her siblings picked up on this and realized she was developing romantic feelings for Futaro, and against some of their better judgements, encouraged her to ask Futaro out. Miku, for her part, hadn’t even registered that her feelings for him might’ve been romantic, and was likewise very uncomfortable in the idea of having to ask him out. She even nearly botched the confession when she became overwhelmed with the possibility that a relationship wasn’t even going to work, and attempted to back out. However, Futaro caught on to this and actually encouraged Miku to finish the confession- of which he warmly and wholly accepted.

Miku began dating Futaro in earnest during their final year at Starfleet Academy, and while their relationship was a little more low-brow than most- they certainly didn’t rush into having sex, despite Ichika’s teasing that Futaro was going to develop erectile dysfunction if Miku neglected him for too long- it was, more or less, everything that Miku could’ve hoped for in a serious, committed relationship, just enjoying Futaro’s company and the warmth it brought her. Futaro even proposed to her at their graduation ceremony, to which Miku fainted, but finally accepted with a nervous laugh when she eventually woke up.

Following their graduation, the Nakano sister reluctantly went their separate ways, as their chosen careers had more desirable postings at different ends of the Galaxy. Futaro, however, made clear that he was going wherever Miku was, even if it came at a detriment to his own career. Fortunately, this was of no concern, as both of them had eventually majored in sciences and would likely not see their career paths coming into conflict with one another. And so, upon their graduation, the two of them were assigned to the USS Hawass (NCC-62847), A Nebula-Class research vessel. The posting couldn’t have been a better fit for Miku, as the Hawass was used primarily for archeological expeditions, which she took to like white on rye- visiting new places, discovering new things, uncovering artifacts untouched for millenia and using them to understand how old civilizations lived and died was infinitely fascinating to her, an evolution of her love of books and what she felt represented Starfleet and its very principles at its core. She was not only doing something she loved, but was out there working to make a difference, and that she felt was what Rena would’ve wanted her precious little girls to be.

About a year after their assignment to the Hawass, Miku and Futaro finally tied the knot, with the former taking on the Uesugi surname and beginning to go by “Doctor Uesugi.” A year after that, she received her first promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade, which was offered mandatorily after two years of service.

A major turning point for Miku’s career, however, came in 2408, when the Hawass visited Monari III, whose inhabitants were believed to have died out at least 500 years prior. During the expedition, Miku uncovered a nondescript tablature detailing a process that the Monari referred to as “Shabal”; further excavations at the site shed light on the “Shabal” process- a self-sacrificial ritual that was believed to help the Monari “escape” from a pending cataclysm. Vulcan records indicated that Monari III may have been affected by a solar flare in the late 1900s, and Miku theorized that the “Shabal” ritual may have gained steam at that time, largely out of mass panic for the looming solar flare and a chance to “escape” a painful death by “ascending” to another plane. With Futaro’s support, Miku began writing up a thesis paper regarding the “Shabal” phenomenon, what role it may have played in Monari’s collapse, whether the ritual had worked and those who partook in it had successfully ascended to another plane of existence, and whether or not it may have been possible to restore them to their own plane. Miku would go on to spend several days laboring over the thesis paper, often neglecting her own welfare (Futaro caught her more than once asleep at her desk) to make sure she was considering every last possibility. Finally, when she felt that what she had written was somewhat decently founded, she presented her findings to Starfleet Sciences. Much to her surprise, her thesis was not only accepted, but recognized as a “significant contribution to the Federation’s greater understanding of the Monari civilization and its eventual collapse.” Such was the academic excitement with the implications of Miku’s theory that she was offered the role of Assistant Chief of Sciences at just 27 years of age. Miku was, evidently, uncertain as to whether or not she deserved a senior staff role, as in her mind, she was only doing what she loved, but thanks to her husband’s encouragement, she made the decision that accepting this promotion would help her in expanding her career options.

Miku would continue to serve as Assistant Chief of Sciences aboard the Hawass until 2410, when crew rotations came up and Futaro alerted Miku that the Chief of Sciences position had opened aboard a high-profile Federation Starship. The ship in question? None other than the United Star Ship Yamato, NCC-71807-B, of which was rotating out its entire senior staff compliment following the retirement of its Commanding Officer, Captain Jodrol Nor. At the time, details regarding his eventual replacement were scarce, but to serve aboard such a storied vessel as that of the Yamato would greatly expand Miku’s career opportunities, possibly even netting her a research grant if she made a good showing. Miku, naturally, had her doubts as to whether or not such a high-profile position was right for her, but after once again consulting with Futaro, she was convinced that she everything to gain from a posting such as this and very little to lose. And so it came to pass that she threw her hat in the ring and vouched for a Chief of Sciences position aboard the Yamato; her application was accepted barely a week later.
